Leland began surfing at age 11 when his family moved to Carpinteria, CA. Since then, his love for surfing strengthened into a passion for board design, which eventually lead to him starting his own board business, formerly Shoal Patrol, which was renamed Leland Shapes in the beginning of 2024.

Learning from some of the best board builders in the area, Leland has developed a knack for high-quality craftsmanship and an obsession with building top-of-the-line surf craft.

Leland spent his early board-building days as a part of the glassing team for Bob Haakenson Fiberglass, and currently works for Channel Islands Surfboards, where he partakes in the board-building process. His knowledge gained through working with Bob Haakenson and CI has had a large influence on producing high-quality, performance-driven surfboards.
